The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is the second generation of fitness bracelets from Xiaomi , after a couple of tries with the first generation.
The Mi Band 2 is part of a wave of new wearables that started with the massiveness of the smartwatches, but proposing more simplified functions for a much lower price – and especially if we do not want to resign to continue using conventional clocks, much more attractive for now than the smartwatches that the market offers.
For $ 35, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 offers several features of a smartwatch, with heart rate sensor, step counter and calories, notifications – although limited – and a battery of 70 mAh that can reach more than 20 days with a single charge. In addition, it has a 0.42-inch OLED screen protected from scratches, although monochrome and with a capacitive button to pass the different screens with information.
Design of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2:
The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 has a silicone band with good fit, and pressure is placed on the mesh unit, which must be removed for charging and use a USB adapter quite uncomfortable but consistent with the rest of fitness bracelets we have seen – That luckily does not require doing it often, since a single load can exceed 20 days, unlike a smartwatch that requires a charge every one or two days at best.
The screen of the Mi Band 2 is small, but enough to show the precise information, and this means that on the wrist the Mi Band 2 can coexist perfectly with a watch without attracting attention, although in many cases it will be enough to replace it, activating the screen with just twisting the wrist to see the time.
The silicone mesh is supposedly a material that resists perspiration, and feels very comfortable. You will have to test it for months to see its resistance, but if it is damaged, there are meshes available in different colors for a few dollars.
The screen is resistant to scratches, but it is inevitable that it receives some and it is not difficult to mark it. The IP67 certification gives us the security of being able to submerge the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 without problems.
Software of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2:
If you want to make the most of Mi Band 2, you must download Mi Fit, a Xiaomi app developed to accompany the device and available for both Android and iOS, and configure alarms – which make the bracelet vibrate gently to wake us up – Screen options, notifications and to be able to track all the data of the wristband that are synchronized per day.
The Mi Band 2 also allows us to track the sleep, which in our tests proved quite effective. My Fit can synchronize the data compiled with Google Fit, so as not to duplicate data and centralize them for better visualization, including calories, heart rate, steps, distance traveled and objectives.
The My Fit app requires a Xiaomi account, which can be opened from the same app but it can be a headache to do so, and that’s where we could say that this bracelet fails. The app is not well polished and in many cases it is frustrating, although with patience you can find all the necessary settings and data.
The options to activate notifications of messages, calls and apps is very convenient, shortening their distance of functionality with the smartwatches to the point of considering if we really need one or a band like the My Band 2 is enough.
